Musical Play: Teacher Training for Early Years Music

Course facilitator: Helen Blackmore (TUD Conservatory of Music and Drama)

This course will provide early years educators and musicians working with young children with the confidence and musical tools to teach music effectively and with ease.  We will develop your skill set using a variety of engaging techniques, so that you have a solid foundation on which to build a deep understanding to pass on to the children in your care.

Learn to use your voice effectively, and revisit (or meet for the first time) the cornerstones of music education in a creative and active way through movement, play and song.

A native of Dublin, Ireland, Helen Blackmore read music at Trinity College, Dublin and holds a research masters based on a study of Music Education in Ireland’s Schools. Helen teaches at TU Dublin Conservatoire, teaching and developing the Early Years Programme since 2006. She also teaches Junior Musicianship to young people aged 6-18 and Aural Skills on the BMus Ed programme.

Helen delivers on-line training for music teachers across the world through the British Kodály Academy and the National Youth Choir of Scotland. In August 2023, she will be teaching at her first international summer school, delivering the Early Years Certification Programme at the NYCoS Summer School in Edinburgh. Helen works with Dublin City Council providing workshops ranging from weekly sessions with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and visiting preschools. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, Helen created a series of popular homemade videos for the National Concert Hall of Ireland aimed at young children and their grown-ups.

Helen holds Professional Certification from the British Kodály Academy in pedagogy and musicianship. She is a keen choral singer and is a member of Cuore Chamber Choir in Dublin.
