British pianist John Lill celebrates 70th birthday with an all-Beethoven recital at the National Concert Hall

Acclaimed British pianist John Lill celebrates his 70th Birthday by embarking on a landmark series of recitals of the complete piano sonatas by Beethoven culminating this February with a recital at the National Concert Hall (20th of February) before completing the cycle in Cadogan Hall, London later in the month.

These recitals spanning the 2013-14 season, explore all the 32 of Beethoven’s ground breaking piano sonatas in a series of 8 recitals taking place in, amongst others, the Benaroya Hall in Seattle and the Grand Hall of St Petersburg Philharmonia. For his National Concert Hall recital Lill performs Beethoven’s Sonata in C minor, Op. 13 (Pathétique), Sonata in D, Op. 28 (Pastoral), Sonata No. 22 in F major, Op. 54 and Sonata in F minor, Op. 57 (Appassionata).

Of his most recent recitals the Guardian writes ‘As near to perfection as we can hope for’ and Pianist Magazine writes ‘One of the major pianists of our time – awesome, fabulous, revelatory, quite overwhelming.’

Most recently John Lill has performed with, amongst others, the Seattle Symphony, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, London Philharmonics and Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Concerto highlights include a UK tour with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, including the Royal Festival Hall, his debuts with the NCPA Orchestra Beijing and Vienna’s Tonkünstlerorchester, plus return visits to the Hallé, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Royal Scottish National and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestras. He will also return to Moscow to perform all the Beethoven Concerti with the National Philharmonic of Russia and Vladimir Spivakov.
Lill, who was awarded the OBE in 1977 and the CBE for his services to music in the 2005, has had an extensive career performing in over fifty countries, both as a recitalist and as a soloist with the world's greatest orchestras. A leading interpreter of Beethoven, he performed Beethoven’s complete sonata cycle on several occasions in the UK, USA and Japan and in Britain he has given over 30 BBC Promenade concerts, regularly appearing with all the major symphony orchestras. He has toured overseas with the London Symphony, London Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, City of Birmingham, Hallé, Royal Scottish National and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestras.

John Lill performs as part of the National Concert Hall’s International Concert Series 2013/2014.
