When did you join the National Symphony Orchestra?

2003.

What do you enjoy most about being in the NSO?

The low brass banter.

Where did you study?

Royal Scottish Academy of Drama and Music in Glasgow.

Why did you choose to play your instrument?

My Dad was a trombonist and a trombone was placed in my wee eightyear-old arms.

Tell us your favourite NSO story/memory so far.

Confidentiality would stop me telling that!

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not playing with the orchestra?

I really enjoy hiking in Spain. I also enjoy going to the gym, cycling and running. 

Who is your favourite composer and what is your favourite work?

Bruckner and his Symphony No. 9.

If you weren’t a musician, what would you most like to be?

An ex-footballer!

What is your greatest achievement – either musical or general?

A 30km hike in 40-degree heat in the south of Spain.

Who is your musical idol?

David Gilmour.

You’re stranded on a desert island. You’re allowed 3 CDs. What would they be, and why?

A classic rock compilation, a prog rock compilation, and a metal compilation.

If you could have dinner with anyone (alive or dead) who would it be, and why?

My Dad, and he wouldn’t be dead!
