The National Concert Hall is delighted to play host to three celebrated and popular writers as part of its Talk Series for 2024 namely: award-winning author and broadcaster Elizabeth Day in Confessions of a Friendaholic (13th March); American writer Armistead Maupin as he celebrates the tenth novel in the Tales of the City series - Mona of the Manor (20th March) and UK author and broadcaster Jon Ronson in ‘Ronson’s Psychopath Night 2024’ (14th November).
In the first of the three events Elizabeth Day, author of the number one Sunday Times bestselling book Friendaholic: Confessions of a Friendship Addict, and broadcaster and host of the hit podcast How to Fail, brings her unique event ‘Confessions of a Friendaholic’ to the NCH on Wednesday the 13th of March 2024, 8pm. In conversation with a special guest, Elizabeth will unpick the significance and evolution of friendship to celebrate the paper publication of her book. From ghosting to frenemies, to social media and communication style, to the impact of seismic life events, no stone will be unturned as they explore friendships of all shapes and sizes.
For the second talk in the series on Wednesday the 20th of March 2024, Armistead Maupin, bestselling and much-loved author and LGBT activist is back out on the road to celebrate the long-awaited tenth novel in his Tales of the City Series – Mona of the Manor. Maupuin has been blazing a trail through US popular culture since the 1970s when his iconic and ground-breaking series Tales of the City was first published as a column in the San Francisco Chronicle. The novel series has been taking the literary world by storm ever since and was recently adapted by Netflix into a critically acclaimed series, starring Laura Linney, Olympia Dukakis and Elliot Page. Maupin is also known to many for his book The Night Listener which was later made into a psychological thriller film starring Robin Williams (in 2006). Armistead Maupin’s talk at the NCH is a unique opportunity to spend an evening in the company of one of America’s great storytellers as he recounts his favourite tales from the past forty years, offering his own engaging observations on society and the world as we know it today.
In the final talk of the series, Jon Ronson, the British writer and documentary film maker whose work includes the international bestsellers Them: Adventures With Extremists, The Men Who Stare at Goats and his five part series Secret Rulers of the World amongst others, brings Ronson’s Psychopath Night 2024 to the NCH on Thursday the 14th of November 2024. Fifteen years has passed since he embarked on the adventure that became his ground-breaking and best-selling work, The Psychopath Test, and now the renowned journalist, film maker and author reopens the case with exclusive anecdotes and fresh reflections taking you on a thrilling exploration of madness and the elusive psychopathic mind in ‘Jon Ronson’s Psychopath Night 2024’. For this event, Jon presents an electrifying journey into the enigmatic world of psychopaths and the perplexing concept of normalcy. Alongside mystery guests, Jon will deliver an evening of incisive inquiry, seasoned with his trademark wit and profound insights.
