The National Concert Hall is pleased to announce a new series of Sunday afternoon chamber music concerts – ‘Panorama’ curated by Fiachra Garvey. The series brings Irish and international artists together for a musical grand tour exploring solo and chamber music repertoire inspired by some of the world’s most beloved cities, from Paris to New York, Turkey to Venice.
All concerts in the series will take place on Sunday afternoon in the intimate surrounds of the National Concert Hall’s Kevin Barry Recital Room, giving audiences the opportunity to get up close to the music while enjoying the natural acoustics of the hall.
Fiachra Garvey said: "It's a privilege to have been invited by the NCH to curate this series. "Panorama" felt like the right fit when thinking of an appropriate title to convey a broad view of a theme or subject. For the inaugural 2025 series I've chosen “Music Inspired by Cities”, bringing audiences on a musical hop-on / hop-off tour of some of the most beloved cities of Europe and the wider world, and the music they have inspired; performed by Ireland and Europe's most dynamic performers. I hope audiences will enjoy the variety on offer!"
On the 9th of February, the Panorama series curator and former NCH Rising Star, Fiachra Garvey, commences the series with a solo piano recital. His programme includes a musical portrait of New York City (with Gershwin’s iconic Rhapsody in Blue), a quick jaunt to Venice with a work by Mendelssohn entitled: Venetian Gondola Song, Op. 19 No. 6 , the Gates of Kiev (with Mussorgsky’s gargantuan Pictures at an Exhibition) and ‘North Circular’, by Irish composer Donnacha Dennehy.
On the 16th of February the Navarra Quartet, hailed for their poetry and dynamism, join forces with leading Irish artists Aoife Burke (cello) and Martin Moriarty (viola) for a celebration of the cities of Paris, Florence and Cork. Commencing in a chateau near Paris with Strauss’s Capriccio, the programme then moves to Cork with R.A Mould’s dedication to the River Lee The Voice of the Lee and on to Italy with Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence.
British cellist Ariana Kashefi joins forces with fellow compatriot, pianist Sam Armstrong, for a recital from the Baroque period to the present day on the 23rd of February. Their programme takes us to Paris (with H. Eccles – Sonata in G minor), Vienna (where Beethoven wrote Sonata No. 3 in A major for cello and piano) and finally Anatolia in Turkey (with Fasil Say’s Ode to Sivas, Hopa, Ankara and Bodrum).
On the 2nd of March the Eblana String Trio, who have has been described as playing with ‘stunning poise that takes, at times, my breath away’ (SlippedDisc) bring Rome and Vienna into focus. Their recital will include Andrew Norman’s Pulitzer-nominated The Companion Guide to Rome and Mozart’s towering Divertimento for String Trio, K563
London is the setting on the 9th of March when Sinéad Farrell and Silvija Ščerbavičiūtė (flutes) and Paul Grennan (cello) perform a programme of Stamitz and Haydn. Stamitz published his rarely performed Op. 14 during his stay in the city around 1780 and during his sojourn there Haydn wrote four glorious Trios and Six Divertimenti, which have become favourites for flute and music lovers all over the world.
Finally, on the 16th of March, pianist and curator Fiachra Garvey will be joined by star Irish soprano Claudia Boyle and renowned Hungarian baritone Gyula Nagy for a programme of popular arias and songs inspired by Vienna, Cadix, Paris, Prague, Venice and more. From The Marriage of Figaro to The Merry Widow, this programme has everything from love to despair and revenge to absolution.
