NCH presents the Kilfenora Céilí Band and Guests this March as part of its St.Patrick’s Weekend Celebrations
Kilfenora Céilí Band with guests: Singers Don Stiffe and Fiona Ryan and dancers Sinéad Neylon, John Fitzgerald and James Grennan
Media Release Thursday 26 January
The National Concert Hall welcomes back the legendary Kilfenora Céilí Band on Sunday 19 March with guests for a special concert of live musical favourites and new songs to celebrate St. Patrick’s Weekend. Since their formation in 1909 the award-winning group have established themselves as the quintessential céilí band, regularly playing to packed venues at home and abroad.
The upcoming show will feature music from throughout their extensive career plus tunes recently composed by Tim Collins (concertina) and material from their acclaimed 2019 album Both Sides Now which was produced by Dónal Lunny. On the night, the band will perform with guest singers Don Stiffe and Fiona Ryan and will also be accompanied by dancers Sinéad Neylon, John Fitzgerald and James Grennan (all of whom have danced with Riverdance).
The group’s core repertoire of dance music, punctuated with an incomparable lift and rhythm, defines an unbroken tradition. Yet their catalogue also includes diverse collaborations and dynamic experimentations, ensuring an exciting and cutting-edge live performance. While acknowledging and incorporating the past, the Kilfenora thrives on creativity and innovation.
The Kilfenora Céilí Band band has travelled extensively, visiting Britain, Northern Ireland, Europe and the U.S. They have performed at Glastonbury twice, once headlining the Acoustic Stage. The band features fiddles, bass, cello, flutes, banjo, concertina and accordion, with what Folk Roots magazine called ‘one of the tightest rhythm sections in the world’.
