The National Concert Hall is delighted to announce a special performance by the trailblazing Kronos Quartet as part of their 50th anniversary Five Decades tour. The concert, which is part of the Perspectives Series, sees the San Francisco group perform seminal pieces from their extensive canon including Steve Reich’s Triple Quartet and works by Sigur Ros, Laurie Anderson, Sun Ra, Terry Riley and Jlin,
For 50 years the Kronos Quartet – David Harrington, John Sherba, Hank Dutt and Paul Wiancko – has challenged and reimagined what a string quartet can be. Founded at a time when the form focused on Western European traditions, Kronos has been at the forefront of revolutionising the string quartet into a living art form, responding to the people and issues of our time.
With an unparalleled commitment to new works, Kronos have commissioned composers from all over the world, including John Cage, Morton Feldman, Philip Glass, Osvaldo Golijov, Michael Gordon, Henryk Górecki, Sofia Gubaidulina, Jlin, Astor Piazzolla, Tanya Tagaq and Wu Man.
Kronos are renowned concert collaborators, working with Laurie Anderson, David Bowie, Rhiannon Giddens, Allen Ginsberg, Zakir Hussain, Paul McCartney, Patti Smith, Amon Tobin, Rokia Traoré, Dawn Upshaw, Mahsa Vahdat, Vân Ánh Võ, Tony Williams, and Howard Zinn.
The Five Decades tour adds to Kronos’ legacy of innovation by performing programs which feature new commissions, signature works from its vast repertoire, and pieces from Kronos’ Fifty for the Future project.
No one is ever going to say that Kronos Quartet is satisfied with the string quartet status quo. This group, founded nearly 50 years ago by violinist David Harrington, has, in its malleable virtuosity, become a wellspring for hundreds of new music commissions. Some of those have become iconic pieces of repertoire; others have provided real-time snapshots of creative collaborations. New York Times
