National Concert Hall’s May-June Programme Features a Myriad of Musical Delights for all Tastes this Summer

The National Concert Hall’s May-June programme boasts an extensive selection of musical treasures for all ages and musical tastes. Highlights over the coming months include the International Concert Series which continues with a visit from Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and conductor Tõnu Kaljuste on Thursday 6 June for a programme of works by Arvo Pärt. The next iteration of Tradition Now takes place on Friday 3 and Saturday 4 May with performances by John Francis Flynn, Ruth Clinton, Bláth na hÓige, Sean-nós dancer Edwina Guckian, Niamh Bury, Thomas McCarthy and more. Perspectives continues with Kronos Quartet who celebrate Five Decades together on Sunday 12 May, Katia and Marielle Labèque who perform Philip Glass’ Cocteau Trilogy on Saturday 15 June and Derry pianist Ruth McGinley who takes over the NCH Studio on Thursday 2 May. In addition, national treasure Christy Moore makes a welcome return for three dates on Saturday 11, 18 and 25 May.  

The National Symphony Orchestra season continues with many uplifting performances and prominent guests including esteemed conductor Lio Kuokman and violinist Karen Gomyo on Friday 10 May for a programme of Shostakovich and Stravinsky. June sees two live screenings in concert, Singin’ in the Rain with conductor Anthony Gabriele on Friday 7 June and How to Train Your Dragon with conductor Ben Palmer on Friday June 14. In addition, on Friday 21 June they will perform a concert dedicated to the music of the inimitable John Williams. 

Elsewhere in the programme Henry Winkler aka The Fonz visits the National Concert Hall on June 12 to talk about his exciting life and career; the RTÉ Concert Orchestra return with their beloved Queen: A Symphonic Rock Spectacular on Thursday 9 May and perform The Music of Ennio Morricone on Wednesday 5 June; and on Thursday 13 June the Gala Concert for the Musician Treatment Foundation brings Rosanne Cash, John Leventhal and others to the NCH main stage. 

 

Chamber fans can look forward to a new exciting series From Antiquity to Modernity curated by Berginald Rash which takes audiences on a journey from the icons of classical music to their modern counterparts on May 5, 19, 26 and June 16. During this time the NCH Studio sees Zubin Kanga perform on Tuesday 7 May as part of our Europe Here & Now series, James Mackin and Stewart Agnew host their joint album launch on Thursday 9 May as part of the Metronome series and indie stalwart Patrick Wolf make a welcome return to Irish shores on Friday 10 May. 

 

Our Learning and Participation programme has a wealth of delightful events taking place during this period. Monday 6 May sees several performances of the ever-popular Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child Screening with the National Symphony Orchestra. Another family highlight is Symphony Shorts which features the music of John Williams on Saturday 22 June. The NCH Gamelan Ensemble End of Year Concert takes place on Tuesday 28 May and the NCH Gamelan Orchestra celebrates its 10th Anniversary with concerts on Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 May. Also in commemoration mode is the Blow the Dust Orchestra which celebrates its 15th anniversary with a performance on Monday 13 May. 

 

Whatever your musical taste there’s something for everyone at the National Concert Hall this May and June!
