Philip Glass Ensemble Residency

Philip Glass Glassworks
Philip Glass Excerpts from Satyagraha, Akhnaten and The Photographer

In the first of two concerts dedicated to the music of the legend in his lifetime, the Philip Glass Ensemble, showcase his dazzling display of minimalism turned up to the max, Glassworks, and three of his mesmeric, ground-breaking operas.

The antique and the modern brilliantly collide in hypnotic portraits of an ancient Egyptian pharaoh, Akhnaten, Mahatma Gandhi’s ‘truth force’, Satyagraha, and The Photographer Eadweard Muybridge.

Did you know?

The Philip Glass Ensemble was founded by the composer in 1968 as ‘a laboratory’ for his music.

1981’s Glassworks was a deliberate attempt to ‘introduce my music to a more general audience’.

Listen out for…

The beguiling simplicity of Glassworks’ rippling, piano-led opening casts a hypnotic spell.

The surprising poignancy of the violas in the absence of violins that matches the mesmerising repetitiveness of Akhnaten.

The use of Indian music accents that lend exotic but timeless colour to Satyagraha.
