Munktell Suite for Large Orchestra: Finale
Take a whistle-stop tour from Italy to Sweden, stopping off in Russia, Hungary, France and ancient Egypt en route with BBC Music Magazine Rising Star conductor Olivia Clarke and 2024 Maura Dowdall Prize-winning cellist, Andrés Vaccaro.
Musical picture-postcards along the way include Berlioz’s romantic Roman Carnival, Tchaikovsky’s virtuosic Pezzo capriccioso, the exuberance of two Hungarian Dances by Brahms, and Fauré’s aching Élégie. Paganini’s Variations on a theme from Rossini’s Moses in Egypt shows off the cello at its most expressive, the finale from overlooked Swedish pioneer Helena Munktell’s Suite for Large Orchestra an animated delight.
