Jonathan Nangle Blue Haze of Deep Time (World Premiere)

The world premiere of the performance version of Blue Haze of Deep Time (2021-2025) by Jonathan Nangle is a site-specific promenade work blending concert performance and installation. Developed in collaboration with Crash, it combines field recordings of the sea with immersive visual and audio experiences, inviting the audience into a sensory journey through sound and space.

The live performance of Blue Haze of Deep Time takes place within the immersive sound installation of the same name by composer Jonathan Nangle, which explores memory, place and the sea and may be experienced across public spaces within the National Concert Hall. It reflects Nangle’s personal journey with nature and sound, created during the pandemic’s isolation.

Jonathan Nangle draws inspiration from his field recordings of the sea, made during walks near his home and further afield. Each movement represents a distinct moment in time, inviting the listener to experience the colours, rhythms and textures of the sea. The titles of the movements—’Bláth Bán’, ‘Blue Haze of Deep Time’, ‘Iridescent Oceans of Gold and White Granite’, ‘Inbhear Glas’, ‘Marginal Sea’ and ‘Where Grey Waves Rise and Fall Unseen’—reflect Nangle’s personal connection to the locations and emotions evoked by these sounds. He shares these moments with the audience, stirring emotions and memories that resonate universally, alongside graphic design by Stephen MacDevitt and audio sculptures by Rory Tangney.

Blue Haze of Deep Time marks the culmination of Nangle’s residency with Crash Ensemble.

Note: While this performance is not specifically designed toward individuals with sensory sensitivities, sensory packages will be available on request for a nominal refundable rental fee.

These packages contain items to help with sensory processing for those with noise or light or other sensitivities.

Please note that while primarily based in The Studio, this event will be a promenade performance in which the audience moves between locations, following the performers around the space.

Please check accessibility for those with access requirements for a promenade performance.
