“James Newby…a master of lieder.”  – The Times
“Kinsella is a meticulous collaborator.” – BBC Music Magazine

Internationally renowned baritone James Newby and acclaimed Irish pianist Niall Kinsella perform a recital in celebration of arguably the greatest song composer of the German romanticism, Franz Schubert. Born 31st January 1797 in Vienna, Schubert composed over 600 songs, in a life that lasted just 32 years.  Some of these have endured as the most memorable in the German lieder repertoire and are featured in this concert: ‘An die Musik’, ‘Nacht und Träume’, ‘Ganymed’, ‘Ständchen’, plus many more.

James Newby is a former BBC New Generation Artist, Rising Star for the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, a Borletti Buitoni Trust Award Winner and a European Concert Hall Organisation Rising Star. James also won the Richard Tauber Prize for best interpretation of a Schubert Lied at the 2015 Wigmore Hall/Kohn International Song Competition. His 2020 debut solo album I Wonder as I Wander (BIS) with Joseph Middleton was awarded the Diapason d’Or Découverte and he continues to give recitals in major concert halls throughout Europe.

Niall Kinsella has established himself as one of Ireland’s most dynamic, versatile and sought-after musicians. He has performed across Europe as a song recitalist, appearing at the Musikverein, Vienna, Liszt Akademie, Budapest and at St Martin-in-the-Fields, London, among others, and has recorded two critically acclaimed albums, John F. Larchet: Complete Songs & Airs (Champs Hill Records, UK) & Airs and Schubert’s Women (Gramola Klassik, Vienna).
