Lang Lang, the Danish String Quartet, Sir Simon Rattle with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, City of London Sinfonia and a Sunday Matinée Series…all part of the National Concert Hall’s 13/14 Season this Spring

The National Concert Hall’s 2013/2014 International Concert Series continues this Spring with a range of recitalists, duos, ensembles and orchestras including the City of London Sinfonia with clarinettist and conductor Michael Collins (12 April) Chinese pianist Lang Lang in a sold-out concert (19 April), the prized Danish String Quartet (22 April), and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Choir of Enlightenment with Sir Simon Rattle and guests performing Haydn’s Creation (4 May). It also features the Spring Sunday Matinée Series with Irish musicians, pianist Hugh Tinney and violinist Catherine Leonard (27 April, 11 and 25 May).

On Saturday 12 April, one of the UK's leading chamber orchestras, City of London Sinfonia (CLS), will perform with highly regarded clarinettist/conductor Michael Collins. Collins, who has the distinction of being the most frequently invited wind soloist to the BBC Proms, will perform Mozart's much-loved Clarinet Concerto as well as leading the the orchestra in works by Beethoven and a new piece by Simcock.

On Saturday 19 April, the hottest artist on the classical music planet Lang Lang performs an eagerly anticipated sold-out recital of Mozart Piano Sonatas and Chopin Ballades, sponsored by Allianz.

On Tuesday 22 April, four great Danes, otherwise known as the Danish String Quartet will perform their debut concert in Ireland as part of the International Concert Series 13/14. Titled BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists  for 2013/15, the quartet is also at the beginning of a three-year residency with CMS Two, the Chamber Music Society of the Lincoln Center’s emerging-stars programme. Since making its debut in 2002 at the Copenhagen Festival, the group of musical friends has demonstrated a passion for Scandinavian composers, who they frequently incorporate into their programmes, while also proving skilled and profound performers of the classical masters. Last season, the New York Times selected their concert as a highlight of the year: “One of the most powerful renditions of Beethoven’s Opus 132 String Quartet that I’ve heard live or on a recording.”

On 4 May, the renowned and revered Sir Simon Rattle will lead the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Choir of Enlightenment in a performance of Haydn’s Creation, an oratorio written in 1796 which many consider to be Haydn's great masterpiece. It depicts and celebrates the creation of the world as described in the biblical Book of Genesis and in Paradise Lost, a mammoth work of grandeur and profundity.

The Spring Sunday Matinée Series commences on Sunday 27 April at 3pm when two of Ireland’s leading musicians  - Catherine Leonard (violin) and Hugh Tinney (piano) – pair up to perform all ten of Beethoven’s ground breaking sonatas for violin and piano. The series continues on Sunday 11 and 25 May and will feature Beethoven’s much-loved Kreutzer and Spring sonatas.
