RELEASING MUSIC IN 2014 - Alec Hanley Bemis of the Brassland label offers Insights on music industry at the National Concert Hall with music critic Tony Clayton Lea
The National Concert Hall is delighted to announce a special event with Alec Hanley Bemis of the Brassland label focusing on the challenges, opportunities and changing landscape of releasing independent and artist-led music in 2014. In the informal one-hour session, aimed at those running independent labels or artists releasing their own music, Alec will share his insights and experience of the industry from his part in the development of an artist-led label.
The Brassland label which has been described as the ‘centre of New York’s other music scene’ by The Guardian was started in 2001 by Alec Hanley Bemis and twin brothers/musicians Aaron Dessner and Bryce Dessner, both best-known for their work with The National. The music associated with the Brassland label comes from a place where folk, classical and alternative rock traditions combine in a kind of alchemical reaction; the musicians associated with it are drawn from an extended family of friends and collaborators connected to the American rock band, The National. The label released The National’s eponymous debut, Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers and the Cherry Tree EP. The label has also released albums by Nico Muhly, Baby Dayliner, Clogs, Doveman, This is the Kit, Buke and Gase and is the US label for The Gloaming.
Connecting Irish music makers, in the broadest sense, with the Brassland community is a central aspect of Brassland@NCH, this session is a unique opportunity to access a wealth of experience and valuable inputs.
